   somehow it looks like it was copied and pasted onto the background…

   I felt the same way too.
   But, I look at the most of cuttlefish photos, they look like this.
   Can anyone explain?

   I think you are quite closed to the object while the distance between the object and the background is relatively far. It explains why your background looks greenish while the octopus seems like properly lighted. Next time take a different angle to get the blue water as the background or use smaller aperture to get darker background. Sometimes sharp object in the foreground in contrast with blur dull colored background will give an impression of ‘copy & paste’
