I would love for fun and interest see all your camera settings, speed, ISO, Aperture, white balance.. Are you using all manual settings? Also lens MM.

  2. Jeffrey De Guzman says:

    Carl

Typically I start with 1/160, F/16 to f/22, Manual, ISO 100, White Balance Automatic.
The 100mm macro lens has a sweet spot where it is the sharpest, that is between f/16 and f/22.

I have closeup filters, 2x Teleconverter, and a Woody Diopter. I mix and match depending on the need.

The closer you get to your subject the narrower the depth of field. So the more super macro you get, the smaller the aperture, but as a result the image will be softer.

A little bit of Photoshop can easily fix this.

  3. Carl Gennaro says:

I would have guessed it all, except the closeup filters, never used them but will my next trip. I never use auto white balance, too much to chance, I just set it on flash and leave it. Every time I play with white balance on a Raw file it seems the flash one is still always the best.
Not sure what a Woody Diopter is but will google it now. :)

  4. Jeffrey De Guzman says:

White Balance can be easily adjusted underwater and in the post processing software of Canon.

Factors which are essential to getting a “WoW” image are composition, proper lighting technique, and DOF.

A Woody Diopter is basically a Wet Lens that you stick to the front port of your housing. It gives you 20% greater magnification.

I bought super cheap closeup filters… $25.00 from Amazon.com It was set (+1, +2, +4, X10) Be careful that you first check to see if your port has the clearance for the closeup filter or you might end up scratching your inner port glass.

  5. Carl Gennaro says:

Funny I saw that set on line and bought the Nikon expensive ones, also bought one for Mul, just got the 2T and 3T 39USD each… I have plenty of room in my housing, about 2.5 inches. Do you ever really use X10? Which one do you use the most? Can you measure your Woody Diopter for me, like to see if it will fit on my Light&Motion port.

  6. Jeffrey De Guzman says:

OMG Carl - I just viewed your profile and your GEAR!!!

    I feel unworthy….

With my Sea and Sea port it can only accommodate the +1, +2, and +4 (single).
The x10 will not fit since it is so thick.

Here is the link to the Woody Diopter

Here is the email of Woody Mayhew, Nexus America”

The distributor in the United States. He is a super nice guy! Tell him I referred you. Woody will be able to tell you if it will fit your port. If not he will tell
you how you can modify it to fit. That is what I did for my Sea and Sea.

$39.00 for Teleconverters…. WOW! That is cheap!!!

  7. Carl Gennaro says:

Why do you think cheap? you paid 25 for set, right not each. here is what I bought, similar to what you are using?? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/shop/4637/Close_Up_Lenses.html

I also just bought a Sea&Sea Dome port and conversion ring for my Light&Motion so I can use my 10.5 wide angle without getting the corners cut off. First time for me using a plastic dome not glass.

I beat you to it, found the link to that WoodysDiopter, I already sent an email to my guy in backscatter. if it fits I will get one. Maybe I can see better. My close eye power is not what it used to be. I also bought the Inon 45 view finder for my TitanD200, I am hoping it will make it easy for me to see. Price for view finder is a grand, ( 1000 bucks) so step price but if it helps me see then will be worth it.

In the end I guess we are taking microscopes under the sea .. LOL

  8. Jeffrey De Guzman says:

Sorry I thought you got a Teleconverter for $39.00 !!!

A winning combination for me is the +2 and Woody Diopter. A focus light is a must!

I think I should be the one asking for your advice… :)

Carl, you can believe how much I want a Inon View finder. But I can’t find it in my heart to part with $800.00.

  9. Carl Gennaro says:

I bought this light last year, I love it
    http://www.nocturnallights.com/SLX_LED_Dive_Light_p/slx-demo.htm

have the night rider ones but I converted it to stick on my head for a night light
    http://www.niteriderdive.com/

I agree, focus light is a must. Most of my pictures have been film, I have a room full of slides, someday I have to scan them, but waiting till I retire. But that might never happen. Digital is so much easier. My brain still thinks in film, can you imagine only 36 pictures so you had to take your time and not waste a shot

  10. Jeffrey De Guzman says:

I have a OMS 10 Watt HID Cannister light for night dives.
On top of my port I have a 5 Watt LED.

  11. Carl Gennaro says:

Cool,, like minds think alike. What I love about nightrider light is service, I flooded my battery on second trip, forgot to close charging cap, ( that trip I took it apart and it still worked until I got home, amazing ) they sent me new batteries for free. Next year the electronics corroded and they sent me those for free. Can’t beat that. I heard they were the best but I know for sure now. I used it now for about 3 years and never let me down once. As long as I remember to close the cap.

  12. Jeffrey De Guzman says:

Excellent! I am lucky that my cousin is the dealer for OMS in the Philippines. But I am very careful with my expensive gear. I do triple checks before I hit the water.

  13. Carl Gennaro says:

Dangerous to test the gods, I do triple checks and that is when I mess up. Only takes one time. Well this is my second time in 33 years of diving I forgot to close something. One other strobe.. sr2000 but in the end I rebuilt it better than it was.

  14. Jeffrey De Guzman says:

    Carl,

You should come and visit me sometime. I am sure we will have great fish stories to tell. :)

  15. Carl Gennaro says:

No wait, I had one more, in 1980 I bought a 7000 dollar video setup, charged the battery and dove in. Gas from the battery pushed out the flat O-ring. I still have the tape showing the water filling up the housing. In those days tape deck was separate from the cameras. It was a giant setup with wings.

  16. Jeffrey De Guzman says:

I can recall last year, when I was gaga over pygmy seahorse. When I noticed that my flash were not firing! Made a slow accent to the surface. Fully inflated my bladder. carefully opened the strobe, the batteries were not placed correctly! stuck 3 batteries in my mouth, place them in the right direction and locked!

  17. Carl Gennaro says:

I will be on the May 1st trip to Raja Ampat, then I be posting again.. :)

  18. Acuan says:

Jeffrey, come and join our RajaAmpat trip, it will be super to see the two of you taking great pictures and sharing them with us :)

  19. Jeffrey De Guzman says:

    Acuan,

I would love to go, but I am saving every penny for my Subal Housing and ports. Perhaps next year. I am afraid to ask how much the trip would cost to Raja Ampat. :)

  20. Carl Gennaro says:

Jeffery,if you can’t dive, what is the point of taking pictures. It’s not the camera that makes the great pictures. Look at me, it cost me triple to get to RajaAmpat, I have to fly from US, pay for my wife ( who does not dive ) pay for my son, I never have the heart to take his money, ( unless he complains about anything then I will )Added all up it cost me about 400 bucks a dive. I better not really figure it out, I would commit myself to a institution for the insane. In the end it’s cheap for you.

  21. Jeffrey De Guzman says:

    Carl

I also do glamour photography and landscapes. :)

I’ll see you next year at Raja Ampat.

  22. Carl Gennaro says:

Love to see some of your glamour shots. Do you post them someplace? I post my G-rated pictures here www.reefseeker.us Be great to have you on board next year. Or in October this year.

  23. Jeffrey De Guzman says:

    Carl,

As soon as I cover my new housing. I’ll start putting away money for Raja Ampat for next year.
